Tried & True

Rancher

A general-purpose field rifle, proven around the way we actually use one.

The Rancher is Driftwood Western’s working rifle: compact enough for a truck, ATV or saddle-side carry, accurate enough to make useful hits across open country, and designed around suppressed use from the beginning.

Tried & True Ranchers are the configurations that have made it through the full development cycle — built, shot, changed where necessary, and tested again. They are not parts lists assembled on paper. They are known starting points.

What Defines a Rancher

  • Useful Range
Built around practical field shooting from close range to roughly 350 yards. A Rancher is not intended to become a heavy long-range rifle in pursuit of capability it does not need.
  • Suppressor First
Every Rancher is configured and tested suppressed, whether or not the customer ultimately buys a suppressor with the rifle. Balance, gas behavior, muzzle interface and handling are considered with the can in place.
  • Field Weight
Light enough to carry, substantial enough to shoot well. We will give up a few ounces for better glass, a more useful stock or a more reliable operating system when the trade is worth making.
  • Practical Accuracy
The standard is a rifle that performs consistently in real field use. Our working Rancher benchmark is approximately 1.5 MOA or better with appropriate ammunition — not a benchrest claim, but more than enough precision for the rifle’s intended job.

What Stays Constant

A Tried & True Rancher preserves the architecture that made the build work: barrel and gas-system philosophy, suppressed handling, recoil system, useful optic envelope, weight balance and the component relationships that have already been validated.

What Can Change

Wood, finish, some controls, optics and other non-defining details may change when there is a good reason. Driftwood does not substitute parts simply because something is available, and we do not preserve a component just because it happened to be on the first rifle. The Proven Build is the system, not an arbitrary SKU.

RANCHER · PROVEN BUILD Stevie 14.5" · .223 Wylde · Suppressed-first · General-purpose field rifle. Stevie established the Rancher architecture. It began as an off-the-shelf rifle and became a development mule: one change at a time — barrel, trigger, charging handle, rail, suppressor, recoil system, furniture and optic. Each change had to justify itself in handling, reliability, accuracy or field usefulness. The resulting rifle — built around a Criterion CORE barrel, rifle-length recoil system, fixed walnut furniture, quality magnified glass and a suppressor setup chosen around actual field handling — became the reference for what a Rancher should be. Over time, the rifle stopped being “STV” and became Stevie. View Stevie →
